Between the Olive Trees: a botanical illustration workshop with Işık Güner 10-15 NOVEMBER

This 5-day workshop with botanical artist, Isik Guner, will be hosted at Cooks Grove for a program filled with illustration and painting techniques, plant education, and daily meals prepared by Chef Semsa Denizsel in the heart of Turkey’s Northern Aegean coast.

This workshop is a wonderful holiday opportunity to learn and develop your skills and knowledge about botanical art, while enjoying the peaceful environment of Cooks Grove. Participants will be treated to excellent hospitality and delicious seasonal meals.

The program begins with the basic techniques of watercolor for botanical illustrations. Daily classes teach participants how to accurately draw plants by observing basic botanical shapes/structures and illustrating them with accuracy. We will focus on developing the ability to see shapes, judge angles, draw in proportion, represent forms with tonal value, use light and shade to make life-like drawings, use watercolor washes, and mix our own colors. Between the Olive Trees with Isik Guner will help to combine scientific accuracy with an aesthetic vision to create original botanical artwork.

Scheduled dates: 10-15 November, 2019
Duration: 5 days
Maximum: 8 participants

Local transportation, meals listed in the itinerary, and accommodations are included in this program. Airfare is not included in our programs, however, flights should be organized arriving/departing from the Balikesir Koca Seyit Airport (EDO) in Edremit, Turkey. ABOUT: Işık Güner

Born 1983, Ankara, Turkey.

I originally graduated in Environmental Engineering, but instead of this I chose this entirely different path for my life and have been working full time as a botanical artist for over 10 years. I am very glad I made this decision, though as the child of a botanist father and growing up surrounded by wild nature made my decision easy.

I can confirm that being a botanical artist is very exciting, fascinating and engaging, as well as challenging. To develop such skills requires constant and dedicated practice, followed by more and more practice to hone my techniques. This I have done and am still doing. One of the most fascinating aspects of the work with plants is that each and every plant is different, so in effect this makes you start all over again with every different species.

For every painting I do, I might need to develop a new technique to apply just for that particular subject, prepare a new mix of pigments to match the colour of a plant you have never seen before or figure out how to apply the texture accurately. Each plant require a different approach, and this makes me feel, I will never get bored with this work, it is truly endless and delightfully easy to get lost inside within the intricate details of nature.
